At The Council on Recovery, we believe it’s not enough to just treat substance use disorders. We strive to prevent alcohol and drug abuse before it begins. That’s why we offer evidence-based prevention and education programs for grade levels 3-12 in public and private schools, as well as local community centers.
We provide the nationally-recognized Botvin LifeSkills Training Elementary School program as a comprehensive, dynamic, and age-appropriate substance abuse and violence prevention program for upper elementary school students.
This highly effective curriculum has been proven to help increase self-esteem, develop healthy attitudes, and improve students’ knowledge of essential life skills.
Our CBSG Program is a unique, multi-cultural, evidence-based preventive intervention program. It is designed for children in high-risk situations – including adverse childhood experiences, attitudes and behaviors – that place them at risk for future behavioral and health problems including substance abuse, delinquency, and violence.
Our support group model sets CBSG apart from other approaches. Participants meet in confidential, small group settings. They are taught essential life skills to help them cope with difficult family situations, resist negative peer pressure, respect themselves and others, set and achieve goals, make healthy choices, and refuse alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.
The Council’s Positive Action program is an evidence-based program that aims to help children and adolescents develop social-emotional skills, promote academic achievement, and reduce disruptive behaviors.
Positive Action’s philosophy is that people feel good about themselves when they act and think positively. The program’s curriculum includes: self-concept, positive actions for the mind and body, responsible self-management, treating others as you want to be treated, telling yourself the truth, and continually improving yourself. The program’s benefits include: substance avoidance, confidence building, self-improvement, stress management, problem solving, decision making, goal setting, prioritization, and acting responsibly.
Aiming to address adolescent health from a holistic perspective, IHCP provides non-clinical services to support well-being and prevent substance misuse by promoting resilience, social and community connectedness, and healing. IHCP provides innovative peer services, community and school-based wellness, and peer mentorship and leadership programs. IHCP also screens adolescents for substance use and mental health needs and helps families connect to needed local resources.
The Choices program is a unique prevention and counseling program for middle and high school students. Working from a base of proven, successful prevention efforts, Choices incorporates two unique elements: a focus on multiple high-risk behaviors, and programming tailored to fit a specific school.
Choices counselors assess the culture of each participating school to identify critical factors that influence the adoption, success, and sustainability of the program. They can then tailor and implement prevention services, based on the school’s needs, that are fully integrated into the school community to provide support for faculty, students, and parents. The result? A far-reaching, comprehensive approach that promotes social and emotional competence, changes perceptions about standards of behavior, and helps students develop critical life skills. The Choices counselor supports the school every step of the way, serving as program administrator on campus and providing confidential counseling and therapy services to students.
