Motivational Interviewing in Practice

Foundations of Change, Ambivalence, and the Spirit of MI with Liz Ross, PhD

In this application-based, interactive workshop, participants will begin to practice the skills and strategies of Motivational Interviewing. The workshop will scaffold on introductory concepts from the workshop by creating opportunities for participants to practice skills in a “learning lab” environment. Specific attention will be given to the importance of the MI Evoking Process and how it can enhance confidence, while introducing advanced concepts to overcome client resistance and discord. Through role-play, partner activities, and Virtual Reality, participants will practice MI techniques to support client movement towards positive change.

Three hours of continuing education credit will be offered to LCDCs, LMFTs, LPCs, LCSWs, and LMSWs.

Speaker:

Liz Ross, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist and the founder of The Coping Resource Center, a multidisciplinary group practice providing evidence based psychological care to children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. Dr. Ross specializes in anxiety, trauma, insomnia and sleep disorders, chronic pain, grief, and health related psychological concerns, using evidence-based treatments including CBT, CBT-I, DBT, CPT, Prolonged Exposure, and Motivational Interviewing.

Dr. Ross completed her doctoral training at the University of Houston, with clinical training at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and Baylor College of Medicine. She has worked in integrated medical and residential treatment settings including TIRR Memorial Hermann, MD Anderson Cancer Center, and The Orchard on the Brazos, with a focus on rehabilitation, pain psychology, and complex behavioral health presentations.

In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Ross is active in professional leadership and community engagement. She is a former President of the Houston Psychological Association and currently serves as Chairman of the Board of PX Project, a workforce development program supporting underserved and underprivileged youth. She also serves as an expert witness, providing consultation and testimony in legal cases involving psychological evaluation and mental health.
